GABIONS are double-twisted wire mesh baskets of variable sizes, uniformly partitioned into internal cells, interconnected with other similar units. They are filled with stone at the project site to form flexible, permeable, monolithic structures, such as retaining walls, sea walls, channel linings, revetments and weirs for erosion control projects.
Gabion structures are able to develop and integrate with the surrounding environment, permitting the preservation or restorations of the natural environment. They are often used by architects as decorative elements of the landscape.
Galfan Gabion Mesh is a kind of hexagonal wire mesh container, which is woven by Zn-Al rare earth alloy coated steel wire.Galfan contains a mixture of 95% zinc and 5% aluminum. The coating offers all the benefits of galvanized wire including its galvanic properties including the corrosion resistance properties of aluminum.
What's GALFAN ?
GALFAN, that is Zinc-aluminium alloy coating, it is developed in 1995 by the Galfan Corporation, this wire coating contains a mixture of 95% zinc and 5% aluminum and offers all the benefits of galvanized wire including its galvanic properties including the corrosion resistance properties of aluminum.
Experiments provide evidence that its corrosion resistance is three times higher than that of the traditional pure zinc coating. Therefore, it is now receiving widespread attention. Nowadays, some developed countries like America and some European countries are trying to replace the traditional zinc coating gabion baskets with 5% Zn-Al alloy gabions.
The material of the 5% Zn-Al alloy gabion is 5% Zn-Al alloy steel wire. It is made into hexagonal mesh through weaving and then twisting three times by a special machine. According to the design requirements, the mesh panels may be clipped and then assembled into the form of different wire mesh containers. When the gabions are filled with rocks or stones, they can be used for the protection of embankment, subgrade, and river bank, etc.
Another type of Zn-Al alloy gabion is the 10% Zn-Al alloy gabion, which is made from the 10% Zn-Al alloy steel wire. Just like the 5% Zn-Al alloy gabion, it is also a hexagonal mesh woven and twisted by a special machine. The gabion box is finally formed through folding the whole mesh. Its application is nearly the same as that of the 5% Zn-Al alloy gabion, which is mainly used for the protection of subgrade, and embankment, etc.
Standard and Lifetime of Zn-Al alloy gabions
The service life of the Zn-Al alloy gabion is typically about 70 to 80 years, which is 3 times longer than the common galvanized steel wire. It has reached the national standard GB/T 20492-2006. 5% (10%) Zn-Al alloy gabions are mainly applied in damp environment, such as river, sea and other water conservancy projects. Its acid resistance, alkali resistance and corrosion resistance properties are far superior to the common low carbon steel wire products.
Galfan gabion mesh has a high corrosion resistance performance, which is about 2-3 times higher than that of the commongalvanized gabion mesh under any conditions whether in the open air or in damp environment.
It has a high ductility and deformability. The galfan steel wire can withstand the test of winding and twisting under powerful deformation processes, and the zinc coating will not peel off.
